Rogaine Side Effects

                               - All you need to know

Although Rogaine (Minoxidil) is accepted as one of the best medical treatment for hair loss, it may not be harmless. Those unwanted effects are called as side effects of Rogaine. Some of the side effects of Rogaine are not serious, and do not require to stop the use of the medication. However, some side effects are important, and may reuire to cease of Rogaine use.

Below, we review almost all side effects of Rogaine, and their solution:
  • Scalp irritation: Scalp irritation, itching, and dandruff are not seldom with Rogaine use. It si calld as "flaky scalp". This is the most common Rogaine side effect. That may be due to the medication’s alcohol content, or allergy to one of its ingredients. In most cases, this can be treated with a good shampoo. Nizoral shampoo can be tried. Also, change of the Rogaine type (from solution to foam, or from 5% to 2% concentration) may be tried to overcome that problem.  If none of those measures (decreasing concentration, foam use) do not work, and the scalp irrittation get worse by time, ask to a doctor. Rogaine use might be stopped.
  • Increase in hair shedding:  At the start of the treatment, generally in the first 2 weeks, this may be seen. It is just temporary, and treatment should not be stopped. Indeed, this may actually be a signal that the treatment is working.

  • Dizziness, rapid or irregular heart beat: This generally occurs due to systemic absorption of topically applied Rogaine. Rogaine decrease blood pressure, and that causes dizziness. Other complaints caused by decreased blood pressure are: chest pain; difficulty in breathing; numb/tingling hands, feet, or face; blurred vision; and fainting. With normal use these effects are uncommon. Consider to use 2% (regular strength) instead of 5% (extra strength). If the complaints persist, talk to a doctor. The complaints may be caused by other reasons.
  • Excessive hair problem "hypertricosis": Increased growth/darker pigmentation of fine (vellus) face or body hair. A minority of  Rogaine users experience this problem. This side effect appears in about 3-5% of women who use the 2% solution, and higher among women using the 5% solution. In this case, the treatment should be stopped.
  • Less frequent side effects of Rogaine:
    • Upset stomach/vomiting
    • Acne on scalp
    • Headache
    • Breast tenderness.
    • Decrease in libido
    • Rapid weight gain.
    • Swelling of face, hands, feet and/or lower legs due to an increase in salt/water retention.
